I need to lose about 25 lbs, so I’m obviously looking for something that burns a good amount of calories. I have a treadmill, but jogging tends to bother some of my joints, not to mention I’m terrible at it! So instead I try to walk at a very high incline at a decent speed, but it just gets so dull (our treadmill is a bit too loud for watching tv).
I’ve used recumbent bikes before and I do enjoy them – I find it much easier to watch tv or read at the same time, and I feel like I’m getting a decent workout. I also think rowing machines look like they might be fun, but I’ve never used one. The lateral stepper looks like it might be tons of fun… or just really painful!
Of the three, which is more fun… or at least less boring?
Which burns the most calories/hr?
Which tones/What do each machine tone?
Any personal opinions on the machines is also appreciated

I like the elliptical stridders myself. Have used stairmaster, treadmills, stationary bikes, recumbent bikes and rowing machines in the past. The stairmaster was the toughest workout though.http://www.ellipticaltrainers.com/

Why not see if you can get a free pass for a day or two at a few local gym. Say you’d like to come doen and go through an light aerobic workout and check out the gym. You will have to listen to a sales pitch while they show you the machines, but can ask questions on how to use the machines, as though you might want to sign up. Try out all the aerobic machines and try to imagine doing each machine for an hour. When you have tried several machines, Say I really need to go, can I get your card so I can come back tomorrow and talk about getting a menbership. Don’t give them your number, take theirs. Then don’t go back there. There you go, free test drive. You might save a lot of money instead of buying the wrong machine and all you have to do is listen to some guy try to talk you into a membership and pretend to be interested, while you work out on five or six machines.
