Choosing the Best Home Exercise Equipment for You

Posted on 01 November 2009 by

There is no end to the variety of exercise equipment you can buy for the home, from treadmills to free weights to rowing machines and complete sets of hydraulics.  It can be difficult to decide which is going to be the best home exercise equipment for you, but before you let these choices overwhelm you, consider a few pointers.

For one thing, the home exercise equipment is going to be equipment that you actually use.  If you’re very out of shape and are just starting out, an advanced stepper may be more advanced than you’re ready to handle.  A treadmill might be easier; then again, if you have problems with your knees and ankles (as many overweight people do) then an elliptical machine may be better since it has no impact.  A good salesperson can help you decide if one of these is the best home exercise equipment for you and you should be able to try out these larger pieces in the store before you actually purchase something.

If you walk on a treadmill and notice your knees are sore or your ankles hurt, switch to an elliptical.  You should also take the space in your home into consideration when choosing the exercise equipment for you.  Treadmills fold up while elliptical machines usually don’t, so make sure you have the space for the one you choose.

If you’re looking for something more advanced, then the best exercise equipment is going to include some weights for resistance training.  Unless you’ve had a lot of experience with lifting weights you may want to choose a workout station.  Those who aren’t that experienced in lifting weights are more prone to injury from improper form.  Workout stations are much easier to use correctly; it’s a lot of more difficult to get yourself in the wrong position in a workout station than it is when using free weights!  Many workout enthusiasts consider a workout station as essential part of their home gym for them.  You can get a total body workout that includes all your major muscle groups with many of these stations.

Of course the best home exercise equipment for is going to be something you use every day!  If you’re new to lifting weights, make sure you get some lighter weights and smaller increments so you can build up to a larger amount.  You can always add more free weights as your fitness level increases so it is not necessary to have a very large outlay of money when you first start building your home gymnasium.

If you hate walking but love biking, a stationary bike is going to be better than a treadmill.  If the workout station isn’t going to fit in your home and you need to move some things around just to get to it, then it might not be the exercise equipment for you.  Free weights and a bench take up much less space than an entire system and of course they can be just as effective if used properly.  The best advice anyone can give you when considering the best home exercise equipment for you is to take your time, shop around, and be realistic and practical about what will fit in your home and what you’ll use regularly.

Home Gyms – Lose the Excuses, Lose the Weight!

Posted on 31 October 2009 by

If you’re one of the many people who are hearing from their doctors that they need to: lose weight, lower their cholesterol, and get more active in order to decrease their risk of various diseases, then it’s time to pay attention. There are many ailments that can be largely prevented by maintaining a healthy weight and fitness level.

One way to control weight is to make exercise a habit. This increases the metabolism, which helps burn calories. But with today’s busy and hectic lifestyles, how do you incorporate regular exercise into your busy day? How will you know if the exercise you do is effective enough to be worth it?

The right exercise equipment, provided you are disciplined enough to use it, may help. There are advantages and disadvantages to owning your own machine(s). Exercise equipment that is personally owned and kept indoors removes the excuse of not having enough time to get to the gym, or enough money to keep up with health club membership payments. It also enables you to work out on your own schedule, instead of getting to the gym before they close, or wanting to work out before they open. For those whom it matters to, it’s your equipment, which you don’t have to share with hundreds of other people, or worry about disinfecting before each use (although keeping your equipment reasonably clean is important!).

Possible disadvantages of investing in your own exercise equipment is that because it’s at home with you, you might just get used to it being there, like another piece of furniture. Too often, exercise machines end up being used more as objects to drape air-dry clothes across, or dust-catchers, than instruments of heart disease prevention. Another con may be that you don’t understand how to use the item, and with no instructors or trainers around, like at a health club, you end up injuring yourself or not using the equipment at all because you don’t know how to use it properly.

Another potential disadvantage is lack of variety. At a workout facility, you have the choice of many different kinds of equipment to exercise all your different muscles. Weight bearing, aerobic, anaerobic, land, aquatic, you name it, it’s not necessary to limit yourself. When you buy exercise equipment, each machine will usually only serve limited functions. If you need a different kind of exercise on alternate days, for example, to stick to your prescribed fitness routine, you may have to either buy other equipment or go outside to run or do another sport — and in inclement weather, that may become another excuse not to work out.

A great way to get around the problem of too little variety is to look for machines that will provide a number of exercises to meet your health needs. For example, the bowflex treadclimber combines a treadmill and climber in one. So you get an comprehensive cardiovascular workout with only one machine. If the bowflex climber is outside your price range ($1,500 to $2,200 for the high end models) new, look around for a used machine. Or look at other types of machines.

The most important thing is to give up the excuses. After all, there is no excuse that feels as good as being in shape!

Fitness Equipment – For Your Home Gym

Posted on 28 September 2009 by

In this article we present some pertinent points that potential fitness equipment buyers could do well to keep in mind when purchasing home fitness equipment for indoor or outdoor use.

Of course, the reasons for wanting a great body may differ for everyone: some may desire a great body to be attractive to partners, some for medical fitness reasons and still others for plain ego boost. However, there are also people who take care of their body because they regard exercise as a fun way to stay fit and actually enjoy it. But, whatever your reason, it is indeed a scientific fact that regular exercise has many benefits from helping maintain weight to strengthening muscle tone and firming up your body to increasing happy hormones, reducing stress and adding to your existing energy levels.

While there are several ways to ensure you have a great looking body, you need to figure out which is the best method for you to stay in shape and if budget and time for hitting the gym are constraints on your fitness regime, the best option is to bring it all home!

Yes, having quality, easy to use and effective home fitness equipment at home is a strong incentive for even those who generally avoid getting up to exercise to try it out someday; after the initial results that most dedicated fitness enthusiasts see, it is a hard habit to break and so with the convenience afforded by having good equipment at home, it is hard to ignore it too long.

This gets people moving and on the fast track to good health.

Still others may want to try faster ways to reduce fat, such as liposuction or going on a diet, but these are only temporary methods; for those who want to keep the fat off permanently, regular physical exercise and a balanced diet, moderate lifestyle and sensible approach to all of these is needed with minimum stress.

So, besides losing weight and toning up, you also have to take precautions to avoid building up that fat again in order to stay fit; since muscles burn fat, you need to convert more fat into muscles with the way you exercise and develop these further so you burn fat constantly.

Fad diets do not work and you only end up punishing your body with starvation routes you may feel tempted to take as binge eating occurs at some point, negating all earlier efforts to stick with the diet or other health complications happen due to eliminating important food groups entirely, which is not recommended at all for a healthy diet.

Diet must therefore be balanced with proper exercises and though you don’t have to go the local gym for everything, it is a good option for those who like socializing and working out. For those that don’t, there is a variety of home fitness equipment available in different price ranges, sure to suit all budgets, so they can readily choose from exercise bikes, treadmills, twisters, steppers, home-gym, dumbbells, rowing machines etc. to shape up.

Determine you current and desired fitness levels, whether you need strength, cardio or resistance training, and don’t go simply on a brand but what you need to tone up to get the best out of your fitness equipment.

Good Workouts from Home Gyms

Posted on 27 September 2009 by admin

Creating a home gym is a great idea for getting into shape and doing so on your own terms, at your own pace and without having to deal with crowds or needing to “dress to go to the gym.” And while all of these things certainly make a case for a home gym, budgets can sometimes get in the way. If a lack of cash is making you put off from creating a home gym, don’t think cheap fitness equipment equates to a lack of quality. There are ways to attain the goal without breaking the bank.

Although cheap can in fact mean garbage, there are a number of machines of all types for working out that fall in the “reasonable” or “cheap” range that not only get the job done, they do it well.

The key to creating a good home gym without breaking the bank is to examine what it is you need first. Decide if a single piece of equipment will work or if you need several and then set a budget. Be realistic about what you can spend. While $10 isn’t likely to get you much more than a jump rope, a few hundred may net you a solid machine that can really work wonders in a home gym setting.

No matter the type of machine you want to buy – treadmill, elliptical, stair stepper, rower or even a smith – there are some things to watch for to help you separate affordable quality from “cheap,” which equals garbage. But before you look for these in different machines, choose the style you want and pick out some models within your preset price range.

Now, with some models picked out, be they treadmills or cycles, look for the following things:

Warranty. A good warranty on parts and labor (beyond a year) generally means the company that made the machine stands behind it. If the company that makes it thinks it will last and do its job, it likely will.

Programming options. Since most exercise equipment nowadays is computerized, look for those that offer some good options. Different courses, paces or challenge levels are important. Also look for machines that offer settings for prime cardio workouts.

Safety/comfort features. These are important. Instant off buttons, extra cushioning, safety locks and more are all signs of good machines.

Difficulty settings. Good machines grow with their users. If there are only two speeds – on and off – you’re not looking at a great machine unless there are manual settings for increasing difficulty.

Good reviews. This means from both past customers and industry pros. Even machines in the “cheap” range can have a number of good reviews from both sources. Do pay attention to both sources. A pro reviewer might not know how well a machine stands up over time, but past users will be able to say.

When it comes to home workout equipment the test of quality isn’t necessarily price. Even those that qualify as “cheap” can be great machines. The key to finding the best in any price range is to do some research, take care examine features and read the fine print on warranties. With smart research even a “cheap” piece of equipment can produce some great results.

Home Gym Equipment

Posted on 25 September 2009 by admin

You can enjoy all the benefits of gym membership – a wide variety of equipment and facilities, good advice from staff and other members and the incentive to work out by making the gym a destination. But, you can also enjoy having the ease of access and the absence of a commute by purchasing home gym equipment.

?

But what should you buy?

?

If you’re just getting into, or back into a fitness routine, you should hold off purchasing anything. Using relatively new professional equipment, under the guidance of a knowledgeable instructor, will give you a good basis for comparison when shopping.

?

One of the first pieces of equipment anyone interested in weight training will want is, naturally, a set of weights.

?

Free weights can be purchased for very little money – a basic set is often under $50. You’ll want a mixture of small, 10 lb (4.5 kg) and 20 lb (9 kg) hand-held dumbbells and a bar with larger, exchangeable weights. Just about any bar is as good as another, but weights can be either metal or plastic. Some people like the old-fashioned clink of metal, but plastic weights (usually composite or sand-filled) are marginally safer.

?

At some point, you’ll want to ‘graduate’ to a weight machine. They offer the ability to focus on specific muscle groups – biceps, quadriceps, deltoids and others – in a much safer way than free weights can. Also, some muscle groups – calves or hamstrings, for example – are harder to work using free weights.

?

Once you’re ready for a weight machine, be prepared to spend some serious cash. Costs and configurations vary. Some are just simple resistance machines, essentially composite rubber stretching straps that allow for some adjustment to the tension. These run a few hundred dollars. Others are multi-station, adjustable weight stacks, often costing from $1,800 to $5,000 or more.

?

Stair steppers are becoming increasingly popular. A very simple model can run anywhere from $80-$150. It offers you the ability to get a good cardiovascular workout in a small space at home with low joint impact, while you build thighs and calves. Beware anything that looks like too good a deal, though. Reliability is key here; otherwise you’ve spent $100 for nothing when it breaks two months after purchase.

?

Some stair steppers run as high as $1,700 or more. At this level you should be getting a lot more than just the ability to simulate walking up stairs. Apart from reliability and handrails, which should be rock solid for 5 years or more, you should be able to adjust resistance level, speed, angle, and distance between the pedals. You should also get a heart rate monitor and other digital readouts (speed, distance climbed, calories burned, etc) as part of the package.

?

Treadmills, too, are becoming a more common part of the home gym. Since they run anywhere from a few hundred dollars to $2,000 or more, you should expect to get a lot for your money.

?

Again, they should be completely smooth working, stable and reliable for several years. A good treadmill should have a great, non-slip surface and it should be able to go faster and offer more resistance than you could ever use as you build up.

?

Like stair steppers, it should come with an impressive panel of controls and digital gauges. Any treadmill that costs over $1,000 should have, at minimum, adjustments for and measurements of speed and distance ‘walked’. It should include calories burned, with tailoring based on age, weight, etc. A heart rate monitor is a great plus.

?

Of course, if you plan to spend several thousand dollars to acquire home gym equipment, you should be prepared to dedicate yourself to a consistent, regular workout. But that’s something no manufacturer can guarantee.

?

The Benefits of Using an Elliptical Exercise Machine in Your Home Fitness Workouts

Posted on 02 September 2009 by admin

Elliptical trainers are fast catching on as one of the most popular home fitness equipment machines that you can buy. If you have been to a fitness gym in the last couple of years or so, you’ve probably noticed that these machines are becoming more and more widely accepted. And that is also true of the home fitness market as well.

First of all, let’s define what an elliptical trainer really is. It’s usually an odd looking machine, and that is because it’s more of a fusion of different machines put together. The best way to describe an elliptical exercise machine is to think of it as a cross between a stair-stepper and a ski machine. It actually takes the best benefits of both of those machines and combines them together into one package.

That means that perhaps the very best feature of elliptical trainers is the low impact exercise that you can get on it. This is because unlike treadmills you don’t actually walk or run on an elliptical trainer. Instead, your feet rest on movable steps that go in an elliptical circle, and that is why the machine is so named. You simply shift your weight from one step to another, and the faster you do this the faster the machine goes. The workout is created by the resistance to this motion within the machine.

So for all of you exercisers that have sensitive joints, this may just be the machine that you need. And that is a welcome relief for those with arthritis or who may have suffered injuries to their joints in the past.

Another benefit of elliptical trainers is that even though they are low impact exercisers, they still provide an excellent all-around body exercise. Especially those that have handles to help you work out your upper body as well. In fact, even though there is little impact during the exercise, they seem to be able to burn almost as many calories as treadmills do.

One of the only drawbacks regarding elliptical trainers is their size. They simply aren’t very small. In fact, they can take up as much space as a large piece of furniture in a room. So before you rush out and buy one of these machines make sure that you have measured out the room you plan to put it in and have made sure in advance that it’s going to fit in that spot. You certainly don’t want to get one of these big machines home and then suddenly find out that it just won’t fit in your room.

Even though size is a major factor to consider, there is still a lot to recommend the use of elliptical exercise machines in the home fitness workout of the average person. As with all fitness equipment, be sure that you shop around and try out any elliptical trainer before you decide to buy it. Nothing beats actually using one of these machines to help you decide if it will work for you. But if you are looking for an exercise machine that is easy to use and still gets great results, why not consider including an elliptical trainer in your fitness workouts?

Home Exercise Machines are a Good Investment With a Faster Return

Posted on 22 August 2009 by admin

Exercise machines are useful for improving cardiovascular and respiratory capacity and increasing stamina and strength. More than ever before, people from all walks of life and at all levels of fitness are committing to better health and well-being with the help of home exercise machines such as ellipticals. This surging health consciousness has resulted in a boom in the availability of fitness exercise machines. This is great because the more convenient it is for you to exercise, the more likely you are to continue a fitness program.

There are many different cardio machines on the market and as there are machines in all price ranges there is bound to be something to suit most people. Cardio machines are also very good for people who are recovering from injury as they will help to maintain fitness while ensuring that the muscles and limb movement are maintained in a controlled range eliminating the possibility of more injury.

Some good examples include treadmills, stationary bikes and eliptical machines. Top quality machines have up to 20 different programs to keep you motivated. For elderly people cardio machines are excellent for fitness and the health of their lungs and heart. The basic machines included in the home fitness equipment division are elliptical trainers, powered treadmills, home gyms, stepping machines, stair climbers, airstriders, mini steppers & recumbant bikes.

Elliptical exercise machines

Few home gyms compare to an elliptical machine for a total body workout. Elliptical exercise machines are without a doubt the most popular “new” type of fitness equipment on the market. Elliptical exercise machines are exercise machines that a person uses to simulate the walking or running motions of their legs and feet without moving in space and with minimal impact on the joints of the feet and legs. And since elliptical exercise machines are fun to use, you are more likely to work out regularly. Elliptical exercise machines are hard to beat when it comes to improving cardiovascular health. If you ever had the chance to work out using elliptical exercise machines, you probably agree that these machines are fun and easy to use. This makes ellipticals the ideal aerobic workout machine for beginners and experts of all fitness levels.

Stair Stepper

A stair stepper is designed to replicate the motion of walking up a flight of stairs and provides an extremely effective cardiovascular workout while also targeting the upper and lower leg muscles; to the out-of-shape or those who are new to a stair stepper routine, however, a quick workout can be an exhausting, arduous experience. An electronic stair stepper is the type you will most likely find in a gym or health club; a motor regulates the movement of the steps, which results in a workout with lower impact on leg joints. The stair stepper is a weight bearing, low impact exercise machine designed for cardiovascular fitness. The stair stepper is an effective weight loss machine, but in a treadmill/stepper comparison it comes in second best.

Treadmill

Because the two most popular forms of exercise are running and walking, treadmills are designed to accommodate both. Treadmills are the #1 selling home fitness equipment and for three good reasons:

They provide the most effective overall aerobic exercise,

they are incredibly easy to use, and

they have become incredibly affordable.

Treadmills more closely simulate walking, jogging or running than the elliptical. And the best part is treadmills have acushioned surface much more forgiving than outside terrain, so exercisers can often go farther, faster and longer than if they were outdoors. Depending on the model you purchase, many treadmills offer different programs to vary your workout speed and level of difficulty. It’s better to stay away from cheaper treadmills which lack the quality, stability, power and longevity of more expensive models.

Conclusion

Exercise Machines are great as they help you develop the correct range of motion and can ease you into your training routine if you’re starting out. The reason many people believe exercise machines are helpful in combating stressful and depressive illnesses is because when you exercise vigorously for longer than 20 minutes, your body floods with endorphins. In addition to their use as training equipment, exercise machines are also a basic aid in motor re-education and rehabilitation programmes, complementing and enhancing the effects of a spa cure.

To lose fat in your stomach area you need to do aerobic exercises and eat healthy. Fat burning exercises are the slow, aerobic, long duration types of exercise that involve most of the major muscle groups. These fitness machines will give you the slow, aerobic, long duration types of exercise that work best to burn fat. Find out more about Home Exercise Machines
